Brand Positioning Case Study - Sirra Sports
Sirra Sports
Case Study.
Performance for every athlete.
Built from Peter’s own experience as an athlete, coach and long-time member of the rowing community, SIRRA was created around a simple belief: performance technology should be more accessible, easier to understand and relevant to the way athletes actually train.
The brand launched with Surge 1, a performance monitor designed initially around rowing and cycling, with a broader ambition to create a connected performance ecosystem for athletes.
But SIRRA was never intended to be just another sports technology product.
It was created to challenge some of the barriers that had become part of the category - complexity, cost and the perception that serious performance technology was primarily for elite athletes.
The opportunity was to build something different.
A performance brand built around possibility, progress and the athlete.
The Challenge.
“They don't get me.”
That was one of the clearest reasons Peter came to us.
SIRRA arrived after working with another digital agency, but the brand and the experience they were creating didn't feel like Peter, the product or the opportunity he could see.
The technology was there.
The ambition was there.
But something wasn't connecting.
There was also a concern around the original brand name and whether it gave the business enough distinction and room to grow.
Rather than simply redesigning what already existed, we felt the opportunity was much bigger.
Before creating anything, we needed to understand the business, the person behind it, the category and where this brand could ultimately go.
The Uncovery.
We started with Peter.
Not the website.
Not the product.
Not the technology.
Peter’s experience in rowing gave us a very different perspective on the category.
He understood the frustrations athletes faced because he had experienced them himself. Performance technology had become increasingly complex, expensive and, in some cases, disconnected from how everyday athletes actually train.
But his ambition wasn't simply to build a cheaper product.
He wanted to create better opportunities for athletes.
That distinction became important.
Because underneath the product was a much bigger belief about sport itself.
Sport should be about challenge, confidence, progress and community.
And performance technology should help more people experience that.
What We Heard.
The sports technology category was heavily
focused on technical performance.
Features.
Data.
Specifications.
Metrics.
Technology.
Those things were important, but they weren't the reason Peter had started the business.
He wanted athletes to understand their performance more clearly.
He wanted technology to feel useful rather than intimidating.
He wanted serious performance tools to be within reach of more athletes, not reserved for a small group at the top of the sport.
And he wanted SIRRA to feel like it belonged to the future of sport rather than simply following what the category had always done.
There was a clear opportunity.
Move the conversation from what the technology does to what it makes possible.
What We Uncovered.
SIRRA didn't need to become another
sports technology brand.
It needed to become a brand with a point of view.
The real opportunity was to challenge the idea that performance belongs only to the elite.
SIRRA could stand for something bigger:
Performance without gatekeeping.
Technology that helps athletes see progress.
Tools that feel relevant to the way people actually train.
A brand that brings energy and momentum to a category that can often feel highly technical and exclusive.
That changed the conversation.
We weren't simply selling performance technology.
We were creating a brand designed to open performance up.
The Brand Opportunity.
From performance technology to performance
without barriers.
The opportunity was to move SIRRA away from being defined by its product and towards what the product could enable.
Progress.
Understanding.
Confidence.
Opportunity.
Movement.
SIRRA could begin with rowing, but it didn't need to be trapped there.
The brand needed enough credibility to be taken seriously by athletes while remaining open, energetic and accessible.
That became the foundation for everything that followed.
The Position.
Performance for every athlete.
SIRRA exists to move sport forward and open it up to more athletes.
The position wasn't about being the cheapest alternative or competing purely on features.
It was about creating a different experience around performance.
A progressive, athlete-led brand that believes better technology should help more people understand their performance, see their progress and keep moving forward.
That gave SIRRA a much bigger territory than a single product.
Surge 1 could be the beginning.
SIRRA could become the idea behind it.
Bringing it to life.
The first decision was to challenge the name.
The original name raised concerns around distinctiveness and whether it could give the business enough space for future growth.
Through the naming process, we explored what the brand needed to represent and ultimately moved towards SIRRA.
Short.
Distinctive.
Modern.
Scalable.
A name that could belong to a performance brand rather than a single piece of technology.
We then developed the brand personality around an Explorer mindset.
Independent.
Progressive.
Energetic.
Always moving forward.
The tone became direct, athlete-led and accessible.
And the central idea became simple:
Performance should feel empowering, not exclusive.
The Work.
This was much more than a naming exercise
or visual identity project.
We developed the strategic foundation for SIRRA and translated it into a brand that could operate across product, digital and marketing.
The work included:
- Brand Positioning
- Brand Strategy
- Naming
- Brand Personality
- Tone of Voice
- Key Messaging
- Creative Direction
- Visual Identity
- Website Strategy
- Copywriting
- Website Design
- Shopify Development
- Digital Experience
The website was then designed to tell the bigger SIRRA story before getting into the technical detail.
The athlete comes first.
The belief comes next.
The product then becomes the proof.
That meant the technology could still be explained properly, but it sat within a much stronger brand story.
And the work has continued beyond launch.
We're now helping SIRRA build its next stage of digital growth through social media, SEO and Google
The Result.
The first decision was to challenge the name.
The new SIRRA brand was taken into market through the European rowing regatta circuit, putting the brand directly in front of the athletes and community it was created for.
The pre-launch was a success, with pre-launch stock selling out.
For us, that was an important early indication that the new direction was connecting.
SIRRA wasn't entering the market simply as another piece of sports technology.
It had a clear point of view.
Performance should feel empowering, not exclusive.
The brand gave Peter something that could grow beyond the first product, while Surge 1 gave athletes a tangible reason to engage with it.
And importantly, the relationship didn't finish at launch.
We're continuing to work with SIRRA across social media, SEO and soon Google Ads, helping build the digital foundations for the next stage of growth.
The product may have started with rowing.
The brand has much further to go.
The Jam Jar's Perspective.
Sometimes the biggest brand opportunity is hiding behind the problem you were originally asked to solve.
SIRRA came to us because the previous agency simply didn't understand the business or the person behind it.
Our answer wasn't to make the existing brand look better.
We went backwards.
We listened to Peter, understood the category, challenged the original name and looked at what the business could become.
That led us to a much bigger opportunity.
Not simply another sports technology brand.
A brand built around progress, possibility and opening performance up to more athletes.
The result is a brand that feels like the business behind it - and one that has already shown it can connect with the market.
Services.
A clearer story for an evolving community.
