Brand Positioning Case Study - Herts Tailors
Herts Tailors
Case Study.
More than 20 years of tailoring.
One very clear point of view.
Herts Tailors is an established bespoke tailoring business built around experience, personal service and an uncompromising approach to quality.
At the centre of Herts is John Styles.
John has spent more than 20 years dressing people across the UK and internationally, developing something that can't easily be manufactured or taught: judgement.
He understands fabrics, construction, fit, proportion and colour.
But more importantly, he understands people.
Because for John, tailoring has never simply been about making clothes.
It's about understanding who someone is, how they live, what they do, where they're going and how they want to be seen.
Over the 10 years we've worked together, that was something we already knew.
The challenge was finding a way to make the brand communicate it.
The Challenge.
Herts didn't need to become something new.
It needed to sound like what it had already become.
John knew his business.
His clients knew his business.
And after 20 years, Herts had a reputation built through relationships, experience and results.
But the brand wasn't always expressing the strength of that proposition.
There was an opportunity to move beyond the familiar language of bespoke tailoring, luxury and beautiful clothes and communicate something much more distinctive.
Because John's real value wasn't simply that he could make an exceptional suit.
It was that people trusted him to tell them what was right.
The challenge was to uncover that difference and, importantly, find a voice that felt unmistakably like John.
Not more sophisticated.
Not more luxurious.
Not more fashionable.
More John.
The Uncovery.
We already knew John.
The work was about listening differently.
Having worked with John for 10 years, this wasn't a traditional client discovery process.
We had years of experience to draw from.
But we needed to look beyond what Herts sold and understand why people continued to choose John.
The answer was sitting in the way he worked.
John doesn't simply take instructions.
He gives advice.
He notices things.
He asks questions.
He understands the individual.
And if something isn't right, he's comfortable saying so.
As we explored that more deeply, one idea kept emerging:
John has earned the right to have an opinion.
His authority doesn't come from being the loudest person in the room.
It comes from mastery, experience, judgement and the confidence to make the right call.
What We Heard.
The strongest part of Herts wasn't the tailoring.
It was the judgement behind it.
John's clients don't necessarily want more choices.
They want the right choices.
They don't always arrive knowing exactly what they want.
And that's okay.
That's part of the reason they come to Herts.
John's role is to understand them, apply his experience and guide them towards something that feels right.
That thinking became central to the refreshed brand.
You don't dress a person. You dress the personality.
Because there isn't one definition of being well dressed.
The clothing needs to make sense with the person wearing it - not overpower them.
What We Uncovered.
Herts wasn't selling more choice.
It was selling confidence.
This became the heart of the repositioning.
The real value of Herts sits in the space between:
Understanding → Advice → Tailoring → Confidence
John understands the person.
He applies his experience and judgement.
Herts creates the right clothing.
The client walks away knowing they've got it right.
That gave us something much stronger than a traditional tailoring proposition.
Herts doesn't need to compete by talking louder about luxury.
It needs to own the feeling that comes from knowing someone experienced has considered the whole decision.
The confidence of getting it right.
The Brand Opportunity.
From bespoke tailoring to a relationship
built around judgement.
The opportunity was to reposition Herts around something more personal and more ownable.
Not simply:
Exceptional fabrics.
Bespoke garments.
Luxury tailoring.
Beautiful craftsmanship.
All of those things matter.
But they aren't the reason someone hands their wardrobe decisions to John.
The deeper proposition is trust.
Trust in his experience.
Trust in his opinion.
Trust that he'll tell you if something doesn't work.
And eventually, trust can become remarkably simple:
“Dress me.”
That isn't a request for more choice.
It's the ultimate expression of confidence in John's judgement.
The Position.
The confidence of getting it right.
The refreshed Herts positioning gives the brand a clear territory to own.
The confidence of getting it right.
Not because Herts offers more.
Because Herts understands more.
Not because John follows fashion.
Because he understands what works for the individual.
Not because Herts changes who someone is.
Because the right clothes reveal more of who they already are.
It became a much more powerful way to talk about bespoke tailoring.
And importantly, it felt true to John.
Bringing it to life.
The biggest change was finding the voice of John.
We didn't want to manufacture a new personality for Herts.
John already had one.
He is confident.
Direct.
Knowledgeable.
Personal.
Warm.
Witty.
Refined.
Decisive.
The task was to make sure the brand sounded that way consistently.
That meant removing corporate language, unnecessary sophistication and the usual luxury-brand theatre.
The principle became very simple:
Don't make John sound better. Make John sound like John.
His greatest marketing asset isn't a clever tagline.
It's more than 20 years of knowing what he's talking about.
The Work.
Turning John's experience
into a recognisable brand language.
The work brought together the strategic and verbal foundations of the refreshed Herts brand.
We developed:

Defining the territory Herts should own.
John Styles Positioning

John's Gold Lines

Website & Brand Content
Taking that thinking into the way Herts presents itself, from the homepage through to the story of John and the Herts difference.
The result was not a new personality.
It was a clearer expression of the one that had been there all along.
The Result.
Herts now has a clearer voice, a stronger position
and a story that feels unmistakably its own.
The refreshed brand gives Herts something that is increasingly valuable in a category filled with similar language.
A point of view.
It moves the conversation beyond bespoke, luxury and tailoring and towards understanding, judgement, relationships and confidence.
It also gives John a brand language he can actually use.
In a fitting.
In a conversation.
In a video.
In an email.
On social.
Across the website.
Because the best brand voice isn't something that sits in a document.
It is something the person behind the brand can naturally say.
And when John says something and a client thinks:
“That's John.”
The brand is doing its job.
The Jam Jar's Perspective.
Sometimes the best brand refresh is simply finding the words for what people already know.
We've worked with John for 10 years.
So this wasn't about walking into Herts and telling John who he should become.
Quite the opposite.
It was about stepping back and looking at something we had experienced for years through a different strategic lens.
John's greatest strength isn't simply his tailoring.
It's his ability to understand people, make a judgement and confidently tell them what he thinks.
That has always been there. The opportunity was to make it visible.
And that led us to a much more powerful place for Herts.
Not simply being a tailor.
Not simply being bespoke.
Not simply being luxury.
Being the people you trust to get it right.
The right advice.
The right clothes.
The right look.
The right decision.
And ultimately:
The confidence of getting it right.
Services.
A clearer story for an evolving community.
