Brand Positioning Case Study - Ocean Gardens
Ocean Gardens
Case Study.
Helping people keep living.
Ocean Gardens is one of Perth’s established independent living communities, located in City Beach and serving older West Australians for almost four decades.
But when we began working with CEO Amanda Gray, the opportunity wasn't simply to refresh the brand or create a new website.
It was to understand what made Ocean Gardens genuinely different - and find a clearer way to communicate that difference to the people considering their next chapter.
The Challenge.
The business had evolved.
The story needed to catch up.
Ocean Gardens had a strong community, an established reputation and a clear belief in independent living.
It was also evolving.
A new generation of residents. A strengthened wellness program. Refurbished homes. New facilities. A major future development.
Yet one important problem kept surfacing.
People could arrive at Ocean Gardens thinking it was an aged care facility. It wasn't.
Ocean Gardens was about independent living - helping people continue living life their way, with community, wellness and support around them when they need it.
The challenge was therefore bigger than communication.
The brand needed to clearly explain what Ocean Gardens is, why it matters and what makes it different.
What we uncovered.
Ocean Gardens doesn't exist to help people retire.
It exists to help people continue living.
This became the turning point as most retirement villages naturally talk about accommodation, facilities, services and lifestyle.
Ocean Gardens had something more human.
It was helping people remain independent while feeling connected.
The apartment might be what attracts someone.
But the community is what makes Ocean Gardens feel like home.
Wellness isn't simply an activity program.
It's about preserving confidence and quality of life.
And support isn't about taking independence away.
It's about helping people keep it.
That gave us a much stronger story than simply calling Ocean Gardens a retirement village.
The Brand Opportunity.
From a retirement village to a place where people keep living.
The opportunity was to shift the conversation.
From property to people.
From ageing to independence.
From facilities to community.
From care to confidence.
From retirement to the next chapter of life.
The strategic direction was clear:
Ocean Gardens should be recognised not simply as somewhere older people move to, but as a community that helps people continue living with confidence, independence and connection.
That thinking became the foundation for everything that followed.
The Position.
Live well. Together.
The new brand story needed to feel optimistic without pretending life was perfect.
It needed to feel contemporary without becoming corporate.
It needed to talk about independent living positively, without making people feel like they were being defined by their age.
And above all, it needed to feel like Ocean Gardens.
The resulting brand direction centred on three powerful ideas:
Live well.
Continue doing the things you enjoy.
Stay independent.
Maintain the confidence and capability to live life your way.
Belong together.
Be part of a genuine community where people know and care about each other.
This thinking ultimately shaped the central brand expression:
Live well. Together.
Bringing it to life.
The thinking became the foundation for the experience.
Once the strategic direction was clear, the work moved into expression.
The website was not treated as a standalone digital project.
It became the place where the new Ocean Gardens story could be experienced.
The information architecture was reorganised around the emotional journey a prospective resident needs to take:
Inspire.
Help people imagine their next chapter.
Build trust.
Show them the people and values behind Ocean Gardens.
Create belonging.
Let them see what community actually feels like.
Build confidence.
Explain wellness, support and independent living.
Create excitement.
Show the future of Ocean Gardens.
Remove uncertainty.
Answer the practical questions that come with such an important decision.
The result is a digital experience designed to do more than provide information.
It helps people imagine themselves living there.
The Work.
A brand experience built around people, not property.
The new Ocean Gardens experience brings together brand strategy, messaging, website strategy, content and digital design.
The story now leads with:
Independent living
Helping residents maintain the freedom and confidence to live life their way.
Genuine community
Showing the relationships, friendships and everyday moments that make Ocean Gardens feel like home.
Wellness
Positioning preventative wellness as an important part of maintaining independence.
Contemporary living
Showing that Ocean Gardens respects its history while continuing to evolve.
And importantly, the brand doesn't simply tell people that Ocean Gardens is a community.
It shows them.
Through residents.
Through staff.
Through everyday moments.
Through wellness.
Through stories.
Through the spaces people actually use and enjoy.
The Result.
A clearer story for an evolving community.
Once the strategic direction was clear, the work moved into expression.

The Jam Jar's Perspective.
Sometimes the biggest opportunity isn't changing the brand. It's understanding it better.
Ocean Gardens already had the ingredients.
The community was there.
The care was there.
The wellness program was there.
The people were there.
The history was there.
Our job was to uncover the story connecting all of those things.
Because the strongest brands aren't always the ones with the most to say.
They're the ones that understand what matters most - and have the clarity to say it simply.
For Ocean Gardens, that story is about something wonderfully human.
Don't retire from living
Services.
A clearer story for an evolving community.
